India's sugar sector remains in focus as domestic and global sugar prices have risen, while concerns around production, supply and festive-season demand continue to influence the market environment. Lower production expectations and tighter availability have supported sugar prices and improved realisations for sugar mills.
Why Are Sugar Prices Rising?
The recent increase in prices has been linked to concerns around domestic supply, including weaker-than-expected production, weather conditions and crop-related challenges in key sugarcane-growing regions. Higher festive demand has also added to concerns about availability. However, the Indian Sugar & Bio-energy Manufacturers Association has stated that the country has sufficient sugar stocks and attributed much of the recent price rise to speculative buying rather than an actual shortage.
Government Measures to Increase Supply
The government has taken several steps to improve domestic availability and manage prices. These include allowing 1 million tonnes of duty-free raw sugar imports and permitting refiners to divert 350,000 tonnes of export-bound refined sugar to the domestic market. The government has also tightened stockholding limits for certain large consumers.
