Why is Gold Spiking? FM Sitharaman Explains the "Global Huddle"

If you've noticed the price of your gold jewelry or ETFs dancing wildly this month, you're not alone. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman just weighed in on the surge, and the primary reason isn't domestic—it’s Global Central Bank behavior. The "Sitharaman Analysis": Why the Spike? Central Bank Accumulation: The FM highlighted that central banks worldwide are aggressively buying and hoarding gold. When the world's biggest financial institutions lose some confidence in traditional currencies due to global uncertainty, they pivot to gold as a "reserve of choice," driving up international prices. Import Dependence: India remains heavily dependent on imports for its gold supply. This means when global prices rise due to international demand, Indian consumers feel the heat immediately. The "Confidence Gap": FM Sitharaman noted that the volatility shows a lack of confidence in any one particular global currency right now. In times of geopolitical or economic "fog," gold becomes the ultimate "Safe Haven." The "Calm Down" Signal Despite the record highs seen in late January (where gold futures even hit lower circuits after a massive rally), the FM stated that the government is closely monitoring the situation. She emphasized: Buying currently appears to be seasonal (festival/wedding demand) rather than a structural panic. Prices have not yet crossed "alarming limits" in the government's view.
