IndiGo Surrenders 717 Airport Slots Following Regulatory Flight Cuts

India’s largest airline, has officially relinquished 717 flight slots across domestic airports. This move follows a mandatory 10% reduction in its winter flight program ordered by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in December 2025 due to severe operational instability. Total Slots Vacated: 717 slots for the January–March 2026 period. Metro Hubs Affected: 364 slots are from six major metro airports (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad), with the highest surrender seen in Hyderabad and Bengaluru. Monthly Breakdown: 361 slots in January, 43 in February, and 361 in March. The December Crisis: Between December 3 and 5, 2025, IndiGo cancelled 2,507 flights and delayed 1,852, affecting over 3 lakh passengers. The DGCA subsequently imposed a record fine of ₹22.20 crore on the airline. The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) has formed a Slot Coordination Committee, chaired by Joint Secretary Rubina Ali, to reallocate these slots to other domestic carriers. The response from competing airlines has been muted. Industry experts note that most vacated slots are for "red-eye" flights (late night/early morning) and represent only minor frequency reductions from stations where IndiGo remains dominant. Because the slots must be returned to IndiGo in April, rivals are hesitant to perform complex network planning for such a short duration. This regulatory intervention marks a "tougher stance" by the DGCA on operational reliability, prioritizing schedule consistency over aggressive market expansion.
