COALINDIA
has entered FY26 with record coal inventories, signallin a decisive shift in India’s energy landscape. National stockpiles have reached ~210 million tonnes, equivalent to nearly 88 days of consumption, while thermal power plants alone hold a historic 24-day buffer. Strong production momentum and rising pithead stocks reflect a transition from reactive supply management to a more resilient, surplus-driven approach, reducing dependence on imports amid elevated global coal prices.
In a notable policy move, the government has also directed coal supplies to the hospitality and commercial sectors to offset LPG constraints. This expands coal’s role beyond power generation, supporting uninterrupted operations across industries. Overall, the current stock position strengthens energy security, stabilizes costs, and positions India to navigate peak demand periods with greater confidence.
