COALINDIA
: The Backbone of India’s Energy Supply ⛏️⚡

Coal India Ltd.

COALINDIA
was established in 1975 following the nationalisation of coal mines in India and is headquartered in Kolkata, West Bengal. Created to consolidate the country’s fragmented coal industry, the PSU gradually expanded through multiple subsidiaries and large mining projects. Over the decades, it grew into the world’s largest coal producer, supplying nearly 80% of India’s domestic coal demand, primarily fueling thermal power plants that drive the nation’s electricity generation. Today, Coal India continues to play a critical role in India’s energy security, with FY24 production reaching around 773 million tonnes, the highest in its history. Despite environmental challenges and the global push toward cleaner energy, strong demand from power utilities keeps coal dispatch robust. Recent geopolitical tensions in West Asia, which have raised concerns around global energy supply, have further reinforced the importance of reliable domestic coal production, strengthening Coal India’s demand outlook and long-term relevance in the power sector.
