India’s growth story is quietly entering a different league.

Per capita income has jumped from just $274 in 1981 to nearly $2,700 in 2024 — almost a 10x rise. Even more interesting? The pace of growth is accelerating, not slowing. RBI Deputy Governor Poonam Gupta believes that if this trajectory continues, many Indian states could reach high-income thresholds by 2046-47. The next phase of growth may not just come from the biggest states — but from states currently below the median, driven by local strengths and state-specific development strategies. India’s economic story is no longer just about growth. It’s about the scale and spread of growth.
