shares surged 14.2% after the Supreme Court recalled its earlier observation linking the company to a potential ₹4,655.24 crore lease-rent liability.
The issue relates to BBTCL's erstwhile Singampatti tea estate in Tamil Nadu.
In its earlier May 29 order, the Supreme Court had observed that ₹4,655 crore in lease rent remained to be recovered from the company. BBTCL challenged this, stating that the amount had neither been formally notified or demanded from the company nor finally determined after giving it an opportunity to respond.
The Supreme Court has now recalled those observations insofar as they related to BBTCL, holding that the ₹4,655.24 crore amount had not been the subject of a notice served on the company and had not been finally determined after providing BBTCL an opportunity of hearing.
This has removed a major source of uncertainty around the company's potential financial exposure.
Why Is This Important?
The scale of the potential liability was significant compared with BBTCL's market value.
The stock had fallen around 15.3% in 2026 before today's rally and currently trades at a reported P/E of just 3.85x, with a market capitalisation of around ₹11,301 crore.
