Banking Stocks Show Strength Nifty Struggles Below 24,000!
Banking Stocks Show Strength as Nifty Struggles Below 24,000 Indian equity markets remained under pressure on Thursday, September 3, but banking stocks provided some relief as investors looked for opportunities in sectors that were relatively resilient amid elevated crude prices and geopolitical uncertainty. The Nifty 50 closed at 23,873.45, down 41 points or 0.17%, while the Sensex fell 417.49 points, or 0.55%, to 76,152.86. The Nifty remained below the psychologically important 24,000 level, extending the recent period of market weakness. One of the strongest areas of the market was banking. Nifty Bank gained 0.36% and closed at 57,380, outperforming the broader benchmark. Financial stocks benefited from improving liquidity expectations after a significant foreign-currency inflow linked to the Reserve Bank of India's swap scheme. The banking-sector strength is important because financial stocks carry significant weight in India's major indices. When banks outperform during a weak market, they can help limit the downside in benchmark indices.
