India’s Biopharma Push Could Create the Next Wave of Healthcare Growth

India is rapidly strengthening its position in the global biopharmaceutical industry through increased focus on innovation, manufacturing, clinical research, and regulatory development. At the 2nd Pharma Summit & Awards 2026, policymakers highlighted the growing importance of biopharmaceuticals in the future of healthcare and outlined the vision of the Biopharma SHAKTI initiative, which aims to launch 100 biologics by 2047. With biologics expected to account for nearly 40% of global prescription drugs by 2031, India is working to expand its capabilities in advanced biologics while continuing its leadership in affordable generic medicines. Government-backed initiatives such as the PRIP Scheme, National Biopharma Mission, and BIRAC programs including BIG, SBIRI, and BIPP are supporting research, innovation, manufacturing, startups, and the development of next-generation therapies. The broader objective is to strengthen clinical research infrastructure, build a skilled talent pool, improve supply chain resilience, accelerate drug discovery, and enhance India's competitiveness across the global biopharmaceutical value chain. This long-term policy focus reflects India's ambition to emerge as a major global hub for biologics, advanced therapies, and pharmaceutical innovation while supporting the vision of a developed and healthier nation by 2047. Key beneficiaries:

BIOCON
,
SYNGENE
,
LAURUSLABS
, and
GUJTHEM
are likely to be among the strongest long-term beneficiaries if India successfully scales biologics manufacturing, biotech innovation, and CDMO services over the coming decades. Gujarat Themis Biosyn shares rose 4% to ₹383.65 after announcing the acquisition of 100% stake in MicroBiopharm Japan a Japanese pharma and specialty chemicals company with over six decades of fermentation expertise for ₹1,300 crore (JPY 21.5 billion). The deal is expected to close in Q2 FY27 subject to regulatory approvals. MicroBiopharm Japan is a Japanese company with 60+ years of expertise in: Fermentation technology, Microbial based research and development ,Manufacturing of pharmaceuticals and specialty chemicals This is not a random acquisition it is a strategic purchase of deep scientific expertise that Gujarat Themis Biosyn cannot build overnight on its own. Japan a premium market : Japanese pharma standards are among the strictest globally. A company approved and operating in Japan automatically gains credibility in other regulated markets like the US and Europe. Specialty chemicals upside MicroBiopharm's specialty chemicals business adds a completely new revenue stream beyond pharmaceuticals diversifying Gujarat Themis Biosyn's income sources. The ₹1,300 crore acquisition will be financed through a combination of debt and equity. The deal will be executed through a Special Purpose Vehicle SPV incorporated in Japan. An SPV is a separate legal entity created specifically to complete this acquisition keeping the parent company's balance sheet protected during the transaction

GUJTHEM
Gujarat Themis Biosyn's ₹1,300 crore Japanese acquisition taught me that buying deep technical expertise through cross-border deals can instantly accelerate growth just as
SUNPHARMA
Sun Pharma and
DIVISLAB
Divi's Labs did through strategic investments making it essential to evaluate what is being acquired and how it is financed before concluding any acquisition creates value for shareholders.
