Rice Getting Expensive Despite Record Government Stocks

The Indian rice paradox: Plenty in warehouses, rising prices in markets. Imagine a farmer waiting for rain, a miller worried about future supply, and a family paying more for its daily rice. All three are connected by one invisible force: the monsoon. On 9 October 2026, India's average retail rice price stood at ₹46.92 per kg, while September prices were reportedly around 8% higher than a year earlier. Yet government rice stocks stood at 38.8 million tonnes, nearly four times the required reserve. So, why are prices rising? India received only 87% of its normal monsoon rainfall in 2026. Delayed rains affected sowing, while paddy acreage fell around 4% year-on-year by September. Industry estimates also pointed towards a potential decline in rice production. The twist? Prices respond to expectations, not just current availability. Traders anticipating a smaller harvest may buy early, while stockholders wait for better prices. Meanwhile, government-held grain does not automatically translate into immediate retail supply. KRBL Limited

KRBL
KRBL, known for its India Gate brand, operates in the basmati rice value chain. Changes in paddy procurement costs, export demand, inventory valuation and selling prices can influence its business performance. However, rising rice prices do not automatically mean higher profits. Expensive raw materials, weak demand, inventory losses and export-market changes can affect margins. Commodity prices depend on weather, supply expectations, inventory management and demand; higher selling prices alone do not guarantee stronger corporate profits.

India Named Gulfood 2027 Official Partner Country

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Gulfood organizer Informa Markets Dubai to strengthen India’s participation at Gulfood 2027. Signed at Vanijya Bhawan, New Delhi, in the presence of Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal, the agreement confirms India's return as the Official Partner Country for Gulfood 2027—marking its second consecutive year in this role following the momentum generated at Gulfood 2026. Scheduled for March 15–19, 2027, in the UAE, the event offers a high-visibility platform to expand Indian food exports across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Middle East, and African markets while deepening bilateral trade linkages under the India-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). At Gulfood 2027, India will showcase a unified national platform highlighting premium, branded, innovative, and value-added agricultural and processed food products. The delegation will bring together exporters, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), startups, commodity boards, and government institutions. Designed to foster international trade partnerships through curated business-to-business (B2B) meetings, product showcases, and conferences, the initiative places a deliberate focus on inclusive participation—actively supporting MSMEs, FPOs, startups, and women- as well as SC/ST-led exporters.

Soft Commodity Rally Lifts Rice and Dairy Stocks

Shares of rice and dairy companies surged on August 24, extending the recent rally in soft commodity stocks after earlier gains in the sugar sector. Rice processors and exporters led the charge, with LT Foods climbing as much as 13-14% to hit a 52-week high near ₹489, while KRBL and Chaman Lal Setia rose around 8-9%. Trading volumes in

LTFOODS
ds soared to extraordinary levels, several times the recent average. The move was driven by firming rice prices in physical markets. Higher demand combined with a relatively constrained crop size pushed mandi prices higher, lifting sentiment for processors and exporters. KRBL management noted that prices could stay firm for the rest of the year, though profitability will also depend on export revival and paddy costs. The company expects a normal basmati crop this season with sowing levels broadly in line with previous years. Dairy stocks participated more moderately. Recently listed Milky Mist Dairy Food gained about 3.5%, while Parag Milk Foods and Hatsun Agro rose up to 6%. These companies focus largely on value-added products such as cheese, paneer, curd and ice cream rather than liquid milk.
