Tata Steel Strengthens Lloyds JV for Odisha Manganese Mine

TATASTEEL
has deepened its collaboration with Lloyds Metals & Energy Ltd by appointing Brahmani River Pellets Ltd (BRPL), a joint venture between the two, to develop and operate the Joda West manganese mine in Odisha. Ownership Structure: BRPL is fully owned by Thriveni Pellets Pvt. Ltd, where Tata Steel holds a 50.01% stake and Lloyds Metals owns the remainder. This arrangement strengthens Tata Steel’s control while leveraging Lloyds’ mining expertise. Resource Capacity & Leases: Tata Steel’s manganese ore capacity stands at approximately 300,000 tonnes annually across its Tiringpahar, Bamebari, Joda West, and Khondbond mines. These leases are valid until 2030, ensuring medium‑term resource security. Operational Model: The company is pursuing a hybrid approach—combining in‑house mining with the Mine Developer and Operator (MDO) model—to optimize capital expenditure and operational efficiency. BRPL’s performance at Joda West could determine its role in other Tata Steel mines. Manganese in Steelmaking: Manganese is critical for enhancing steel’s strength, hardness, and corrosion resistance. Roughly 15 kg of manganese is required per tonne of steel, making secure access to this raw material vital for Tata Steel’s production strategy. Future Growth Plans: Beyond manganese, Tata Steel and Lloyds Metals are exploring a greenfield steel plant in Maharashtra with a planned capacity of 6 million tonnes annually, to be developed in two phases. This project would expand Tata Steel’s footprint in the state and integrate mining, iron ore processing, and steelmaking capabilities.

Lloyds Metals & Energy Q1 Profit and Revenue Rise 22% Despite Margin Contraction

Research Analyst: UJVIN NEVATIA (PROPRIETOR: NEVAT INVESTMENTS) | SEBI Registration No.: INH100009628

LLOYDSME
reported a solid performance for the first quarter of FY27, with consolidated net profit rising 22% year-on-year to ₹741 crore. Revenue from operations also increased 22% to ₹2,413 crore, driven by higher iron ore sales volumes and improved operational performance across its mining business. The company's operating performance remained strong, although margins moderated during the quarter. EBITDA increased 12% year-on-year to ₹916 crore, while the EBITDA margin contracted to 38% from 42% in the previous quarter, reflecting higher operating costs and changes in the sales mix. Despite the margin pressure, the company continued to deliver healthy profitability, supported by strong production and sales from its iron ore operations. Industry & Economic Impact: The results highlight continued strength in India's mining and metals sector, supported by healthy demand for iron ore from the steel industry and ongoing infrastructure activity. Higher production and sales volumes continue to support revenue growth, although rising costs remain a key factor influencing operating margins. From an economic perspective, strong performance by iron ore producers supports the domestic steel value chain, infrastructure development, manufacturing, and exports. Sustained mining activity also contributes to employment, royalty collections, and industrial growth, reinforcing the sector's importance to India's economy. Source: NDTV Profit No Recommendations
