JSW Steel: Record Sales Volumes in Q2,but premium valuations

JSWSTEEL
JSW Steel (NSE : JSWSTEEL) produces flat and long steel products. It has operations in India, the USA and Italy, with a combined crude steel capacity of 37.9 million tonnes. What happened: In Q2FY27, JSW Steel’s consolidated sales volume grew 13% year on year to 7.46 million tonnes, the highest ever. Flat product sales rose 16% and auto sector sales grew 36%, both at record levels. Realisations rose nearly 7% to Rs 73,037 per tonne. Net sales grew 20.7% year on year and net profit surged 225.6% to Rs 5,359 crore. The Vijayanagar BF-3 ramp-up in Karnataka drove the production increase. Why it matters: India’s steel output grew 5.6% year on year to 130 million tonnes during January to September 2026, among the fastest globally. Chinese steel production fell 2.9% over the same period, supporting prices worldwide. Auto was the standout in Q2, with autos, infrastructure and real estate the primary demand drivers. India domestic sales were 7.27 million tonnes, up 14% year on year. What I am watching: JSW trades at a P/E of 19.4 times, a 75% premium to SAIL at 11.1 times. ROE is 10.2%. Coking coal and freight costs are key input variables. The US and Italian operations contribute to consolidated volumes but their margin profiles are different from the domestic business. Demand from autos and real estate needs to sustain to justify the premium multiple. My stance: The Q2 numbers are strong and the volume story is real. But at 19.4 times earnings, JSW is priced for continued execution. Input cost moves and the margin drag from US and Italian operations add complexity. The domestic business earns the premium; the question is whether it can keep compounding at this pace. I do not hold a position in JSW Steel at the time of writing. This is not investment advice.

SAIL: Profit Jumps 315%, but Flat Capacity

SAIL
Steel Authority of India (SAIL) is a government-controlled integrated steel producer. It makes flat and long steel products across five integrated plants. Its standalone crude steel capacity is approximately 19 million tonnes, little changed over the past several years. What happened: In Q2FY27, SAIL’s standalone revenue grew 19.8% year on year to Rs 31,997.5 crore. EBITDA margin rose 370 basis points to 13.2%. Net profit surged 315.4% to Rs 1,773.7 crore. Steel sales were 5.2 million tonnes. Realisations grew an estimated 12.9% to Rs 61,532 per tonne, aided by higher global steel prices as Chinese output fell 2.9% year on year during January to September 2026. Why it matters: The profit jump is real but largely price-driven. SAIL’s capacity has been broadly flat for several years, while peers like JSW Steel have expanded aggressively. SAIL trades at a standalone P/E of 11.1 times, a 43% discount to JSW at 19.4 times. The market is pricing in SAIL’s limited capacity growth and lower capital efficiency relative to private sector peers. What I am watching: SAIL’s standalone ROE is 6.6%, against JSW’s 10.2%. The steel price tailwind from China’s slowdown may not persist. Coking coal costs and freight remain key input variables. Demand from autos, infrastructure and real estate needs to hold to support current realisations. Any reversal in global steel prices would disproportionately affect SAIL given its cost structure. My stance: The Q2 numbers look strong on paper. But SAIL is a price-taker in a commodity cycle, with flat capacity and a government ownership structure that limits capital agility. The 43% discount to JSW Steel is not irrational. I do not hold a position in SAIL at the time of writing. This is not investment advice.

Ministry of Steel H1 FY27 Performance Update

India’s steel sector recorded steady demand-driven growth in the first half of FY27, according to data from the Ministry of Steel. Finished steel consumption rose 7.6% year-on-year to 85 million tonnes (Mt) during April–September FY27, supported by a 7.7% YoY increase in September alone to 14.4 Mt. Over the H1 FY27 period, crude steel production grew 2.9% to 85.1 Mt—against a national crude steel capacity of 223 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa)—while finished steel production expanded 4.1% to 82 Mt. Alloy steel output surged 32% to 5.83 Mt. On the trade front, finished steel exports rose 26.2% to 3.55 Mt, with total export value climbing 28.9% to ₹28,263.7 crore ($2.98 billion), led by strong demand from top destination markets including the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Vietnam, and Italy. To guide long-term structural expansion, the Ministry of Steel formulated the draft National Steel Policy (Vision 2047), targeting a total crude steel capacity of 604 Mt, per capita consumption of 302 kg, and annual exports of 45 Mt by 2047, alongside a reduction in carbon emission intensity from 2.54 to ~1.54 tonnes of CO₂ per tonne of crude steel. Sectoral operational achievements included MOIL Limited logging its highest-ever first-half manganese ore production of 0.96 Mt. Under the Green Steel Initiative, 104 steel producers received Green Steel Certificates through October 2026, with most certified products earning 5-star ratings. Additionally, state-owned mining and steel majors NMDC and Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) established subsidiaries at GIFT City, including NMDC Global IFSC Limited to finance overseas critical mineral acquisitions.

SAIL Q2 FY27: Profit Up 315%, EBITDA Margin Expands

📊 Steel Authority of India

SAIL
reported its Q2 FY27 standalone numbers on 27 Oct 2026, and the jump in profitability stands out among PSU metal names this results season. Key numbers from the quarter (standalone, YoY): ✅ Revenue from operations: ₹31,998 Cr vs ₹26,704 Cr, up about 20% ✅ Net profit: ₹1,774 Cr vs ₹427 Cr, up about 315% ✅ EBITDA: ₹4,561 Cr vs ₹2,829 Cr, margin about 14.4% vs 10.7% ✅ H1 FY27 net profit: ₹3,410 Cr vs ₹1,112 Cr in H1 FY26 ✅ H1 crude steel production 9.6 MT vs 9.5 MT, so most of the gain came from realisations and costs, not volume What to track from here: ✅ Whether steel prices and import trends support these margins in H2 ✅ Coking coal cost movement and its impact on EBITDA per tonne ✅ Progress on capacity expansion and capex funding ✅ Domestic demand: India steel consumption grew about 8% while China output fell A low base flatters the percentage growth, so the real test is whether margins hold over the next few quarters. What is your view: is this the start of a cyclical upturn for Indian steel makers, or a one-quarter spike? However, the pattern is not confirmed until price action establishes a meaningful reversal. -->Global Cues: US Markets Higher, Crude Eases Slightly US markets: The S&P 500 gained 0.7%, the Nasdaq rose around 0.6–0.8%, and the Dow Jones advanced approximately 0.7% on Monday, supported by technology and semiconductor stocks. ---> What do the flows indicate?
