Following the purchase, its holding increased from around 70.46% to 73.16%. The promoter increasing its stake has been interpreted positively by the market, as it signals higher promoter commitment and confidence in the business. The stock has also witnessed a significant spike in trading volumes following the transaction. But There’s a Catch The latest quarterly performance was relatively weak. Shanthi Gears Ltd is a leading Indian manufacturer of gears, gearboxes, geared motors and power-transmission solutions, serving industries such as steel, cement, mining, sugar, power, cranes, railways, textiles and other industrial applications. As a subsidiary of Tube Investments of India, part of the Murugappa Group, the company benefits from strong parentage, established customer relationships and integrated manufacturing capabilities. FY26 was a challenging year. Revenue declined 14% to ₹518.7 crore because of lower order inflows in the first half and customer schedule deferments, while profit before tax declined 21% to ₹102.7 crore. Q4 revenue fell 11.8% year-on-year to ₹135.1 crore and net profit declined 27.6% to ₹16.3 crore. The weakness is therefore not simply a margin issue; demand and order timing were major factors. However, the company achieved a strong 39% ROIC and generated ₹29.8 crore of free cash flow during FY26, demonstrating that capital efficiency remains a significant strength. The company also recorded its highest-ever quarterly order booking of ₹178 crore in Q4, which provides some evidence of improving future demand. The June 2026 quarter, however, showed that the recovery is not yet established: revenue fell 14.4% year-on-year to ₹115.5 crore and profit dropped 56.6% to ₹9.85 crore. At around ₹399, the stock trades at roughly 48 times trailing earnings with a price-to-book ratio near 6.9, despite negative recent revenue and profit growth. This is the key concern. Shanthi Gears is a high-quality business with strong ROIC, zero debt and excellent parentage, but the valuation leaves little room for prolonged weakness. Overall, the company has attractive long-term industrial-growth potential, but at the current valuation, sustained order-book growth and a meaningful recovery in earnings are essential to justify the premium investors are paying.
