Karnataka Bank: Cheap Growth, Real Opportunity?

KTKBANK
Karnataka Bank is emerging as an interesting value play among India’s mid-cap private banks. Its loan book is growing faster than many larger peers, yet the stock trades at a steep discount to HDFC Bank. For shareholders, this gap can create value if growth and asset quality continue improving. In Q1 FY27, Karnataka Bank’s advances grew 16.6% year-on-year to ₹86,610 crore. High-margin retail loans, including gold loans, grew 17.8%. Net profit jumped 43.3% to ₹419 crore, while net interest income rose 24.2% to ₹938 crore. The net interest margin improved to 3.20% from 2.82% a year earlier. Asset quality also moved in the right direction. Gross NPA fell to 2.58% from 3.46%, while net NPA declined to 0.87% from 1.44%. Lower credit provisions helped profits. The bank’s capital adequacy ratio stood at a comfortable 21.1%. For FY26, net profit was ₹1,310.5 crore, against ₹1,272.4 crore in FY25. Advances increased to ₹83,339.9 crore, while deposits reached ₹1,08,778.8 crore. However, FY26 NII fell 5.8% and NIM moderated to 2.88%, showing that profitability remains sensitive to interest-rate conditions. Valuation is the biggest attraction. Karnataka Bank trades around 0.95 times price-to-book, compared with about 1.85 times for HDFC Bank, implying roughly a 49% discount. A lower multiple is understandable because HDFC has a much larger scale and pan-India franchise, but the gap may narrow if Karnataka Bank sustains growth. For shareholders, the opportunity is meaningful, but not risk-free. Regional concentration, competition for deposits and asset-quality risks remain. The investment case therefore rests on improving returns, stable NIMs and continued loan growth. If these persist, today’s discount could become a source of significant shareholder value for its shareholders

Karnataka bank Shares Surge in August 2027

Most private banking stocks have seen healthy buying interest recently amid strong Q1FY27 earnings, even though some major players have reported higher funding costs and margin pressure. Stocks such as Karnataka Bank have jumped over 15% so far in August. Shares of DCB Bank, AU Small Finance Bank, City Union Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, IDFC First Bank, and Axis Bank have gained between 1-9% this month so far. However, two major private banking stocks- ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank- are down 1% and 3%, respectively, this month due to profit booking. A confluence of factors is supporting healthy buying interest in private banking stocks. The Q1 numbers of several private lenders, such as ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, and IDFC First Bank, were better than expected. Their asset quality improved, with several of them reporting NPAs at multi-year lows
