Vedanta Invests $600 Million in South Africa

Vedanta Limited (NSE: VEDL)

VEDL
will invest about $600 million in Gamsberg Phase II in South Africa. The expansion doubles zinc capacity there to 500,000 tonnes a year. The company announced this on October 18, 2026. The project sits under Vedanta Zinc International. It is part of a bigger goal of 3 million tonnes of zinc a year worldwide. Hindustan Zinc Limited is expected to supply 2 million tonnes of that, and Vedanta Zinc International the other 1 million. Why it matters: Zinc demand follows infrastructure, steel galvanisation and manufacturing activity. A larger Gamsberg adds volume outside India, so group output depends less on one geography. More tonnes from one site also spread fixed costs over a bigger base. My view: Capacity is not output. Cash flow improves only if the plant ramps up on schedule and LME zinc prices hold. Higher volume helps most when prices are steady or rising. If prices fall, each extra tonne earns less. With $600 million committed, execution matters more than the headline. I read this as a positive for the metals segment over 3 to 12 months, but the proof will come in reported volumes. What I am watching: ramp-up milestones for the Gamsberg Phase II concentrator, quarterly volumes from Hindustan Zinc Limited and Vedanta Zinc International, and the LME zinc price trend. Main risks are execution delays, power supply and regulatory or geopolitical issues in South Africa.
