Closing Bell: Nifty Ends 22,600, Sensex Slips 429 Points

Indian equity benchmarks closed sharply lower on Wednesday, snapping a two-session gaining streak after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50%. The central bank also shifted its monetary policy stance to “calibrated tightening”, citing persistent price pressures. The Sensex declined 429.11 points, or 0.59%, to 72,638.70, while the Nifty 50 fell 173.05 points, or 0.76%, to 22,603.05. Among Nifty 50 stocks,

On the other hand, Kotak Mahindra Bank, BSE Ltd, Bharti Airtel, ICICI Bank and Coal India featured among the notable gainers. In the broader market, the Nifty MidCap index slipped around 0.3%, while the Nifty SmallCap index advanced nearly 0.4%. Sectorally, Media and PSU Bank indices ended higher, while most other sectoral gauges remained under pressure. Auto, Metal and Realty stocks witnessed relatively stronger selling, with the respective indices declining around 1–2%. The RBI’s unexpected policy shift remained the key trigger for market volatility, as investors reassessed the outlook for interest rates, liquidity and corporate borrowing costs.
