Closing Bell: Sensex, Nifty end little changed on expiry day; IT rallies while FMCG and banking stocks weigh
Synopsis: Indian benchmark indices settled almost unchanged after a volatile expiry-day session. Strong buying in IT and realty stocks was offset by weakness in FMCG, energy and banking counters. Indian equity benchmarks closed on a muted note on July 28, with markets witnessing choppy trade throughout the expiry session. The Sensex slipped 69.86 points (0.09%) to 76,765.92, while the Nifty 50 edged lower by 10.60 points (0.04%) to 23,985.35. Sectoral trends remained mixed. Nifty IT led the gains, surging 3.2%, followed by Nifty Realty (2%) and Nifty Consumer Durables (1.08%). Nifty Auto advanced 0.69%, while Nifty Pharma ended 0.2% higher. On the losing side, Nifty Energy emerged as the biggest laggard, falling 1.7%. Nifty FMCG declined 1.4%, while Nifty PSU Bank dropped 0.9%. Nifty Metal fell 0.6%, Nifty Bank slipped 0.58%, Nifty Infrastructure lost 0.5%, Nifty Private Bank eased 0.4%, and Nifty Media ended 0.34% lower.
