Market Close | Benchmark indices end lower amid volatile trade

Indian equities ended on a weak note on August 17, with the Nifty finishing below the 24,300 level. The Sensex declined 281.09 points, or 0.36 percent, to close at 77,728.16, while the Nifty slipped 78.35 points, or 0.32 percent, to settle at 24,287.65. $INFY , !Sun Pharma, !HCL Tech, !Nestle India and !TCS were among the biggest Nifty decliners. On the other hand, !Hindalco, !Tata Steel, !Axis Bank, !HDFC Life and !ONGC featured among the leading gainers. Sector-wise, the IT index was the biggest drag, falling nearly 2 percent. In contrast, the Metal index advanced 1.2 percent, while the Realty index gained 1.5 percent.
