SUN PHARMA: MFN Pricing Deal Delays US Tariffs

SUNPHARMA
Sun Pharmaceutical Industries has agreed to extend “most favoured nation” (MFN) drug pricing to US state Medicaid programmes and future innovative medicine launches as part of an agreement aimed at delaying potential US tariffs, the company said on September 1. The announcement was made during a White House signing ceremony attended by several major pharmaceutical manufacturers. Since many details of the agreement remain confidential, its immediate financial impact on Sun Pharma is difficult to assess. “We are proud to play our part in delivering the medicines that millions of American patients count on every day,” Sun Pharma said. The company added that the agreement recognises its investment in the US market by delaying Section 232 tariffs on innovative pharmaceutical products for more than two years. US President Donald Trump has threatened tariffs of up to 100% on imported branded pharmaceutical products and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), arguing that Americans pay significantly more for medicines than patients in other developed countries. The US accounts for roughly 27% of Sun Pharma’s global revenue and remains its largest market for innovative medicines. Over the past decade, the company has transformed from a predominantly generic-drug manufacturer into a specialty pharmaceutical business, expanding its presence in dermatology, immunology, ophthalmology and oncology. For Sun Pharma, the most significant benefit of the agreement is the delay of potential Section 232 tariffs on innovative medicines for more than two years. Avoiding such tariffs could prove more valuable in the near term than the financial impact of extending MFN pricing, particularly as the company continues to strengthen its presence in the US.
