's stock climbed 5% to Rs 2,810 per share today, marking a five-month peak, following the announcement of a strategic licensing agreement with Biocon for the distribution of the popular weight-loss medication Semaglutide. The deal positions Ajanta to tap into the burgeoning demand for GLP-1 therapies in emerging markets. Under the terms, Biocon will provide Semaglutide supplies to Ajanta, granting the company exclusive rights to market the drug in 23 countries and semi-exclusive access in three additional nations spanning Africa, West Asia, and Central Asia. This collaboration leverages Ajanta's established distribution networks in these regions to accelerate penetration. Semaglutide, renowned for its role in enhancing blood sugar control among adults with type 2 diabetes and aiding weight management, operates as a GLP-1 receptor agonist. With the product's patent set to lapse in the majority of target markets by March 2026, the timing couldn't be more opportune for Ajanta's expansion. The company anticipates launching the drug commercially once regulatory nods are secured, with approvals projected for the latter half of 2026 or the first quarter of 2027. This move comes amid a challenging year for the sector: Ajanta's shares have dipped 5% year-to-date, mirroring a 2% decline in the Nifty Pharma index. In contrast, Biocon's stock edged up 0.5% in midday trading on the news.
