IndusInd Bank Shares Plunge Amid Derivatives Portfolio Discrepancies

INDUSINDBK
d Bank shares experienced a significant drop, crashing by as much as 25%, following the disclosure of discrepancies within its derivatives portfolio. The bank's internal review has revealed a potential adverse impact of 2.35% on its net worth, which could translate to a profit hit of approximately Rs 1,500 crore. The sharp market reaction was further fueled by recent developments, including the resignation of the bank's CFO and the CEO's extension being limited to one year instead of the expected three. Brokerage firms have subsequently lowered their target prices for IndusInd Bank shares. The discrepancies surfaced during an internal review of the bank's derivatives portfolio, prompted by the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) September 2023 guidelines on lenders' investment portfolios, specifically concerning "Other Asset and Other Liability" accounts. IndusInd Bank's CEO, Sumant Kathpalia, indicated during an analyst call that the financial impact would likely be reflected in the profit and loss (P&L) statement, as general reserves cannot be utilized. The final extent of the financial impact remains uncertain, as an external review is currently underway. This situation has created significant uncertainty among investors, leading to the sharp decline in the bank's stock price.
