Will BSE and NSE Be Closed on Jan 15, 2026, for Civic Polls?

The Maharashtra government declared January 15, 2026, a public holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act for elections in 29 municipal corporations, including Mumbai's Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). As of January 8, 2026,

BSE
and NSE have not announced any closure for that date. Official 2026 trading holiday calendars from both exchanges exclude January 15, and it coincides with the Sensex weekly F&O expiry. In contrast to the 2017 BMC polls (when markets closed), no similar decision has been made yet. RBI has also issued no bank closure notice for January 15 in Maharashtra—unlike typical NI Act holidays that affect RBI markets. Uncertainty persists, but current indications suggest markets will remain open. Traders should monitor official circulars from BSE, NSE, and RBI for any last-minute updates.
