has partnered with Norway-based Ocean Sun to explore an innovative floating solar photovoltaic technology in India, marking another step in the company’s efforts to expand renewable energy solutions. Under the collaboration, an approximately 300 kWp pilot project will be deployed at the Mulshi reservoir in Maharashtra. The project is intended to evaluate the technology’s performance, operational reliability and scalability under Indian climatic and reservoir conditions.
The initiative is strategically relevant because floating solar can complement India’s rapidly expanding renewable-energy capacity while addressing land constraints associated with large utility-scale projects. Reservoirs linked to hydroelectric plants and other existing water infrastructure could potentially provide locations for future floating solar installations, subject to technical, environmental and commercial feasibility.
For Tata Power, the pilot represents an opportunity to test an emerging solar technology before considering broader commercial-scale deployment. Successful results at Mulshi could support the development of larger floating solar projects and strengthen the company’s renewable-energy portfolio. The partnership with Ocean Sun also highlights Tata Power’s focus on adopting international clean-energy technologies and adapting them to Indian operating conditions. The key factors to monitor will be the pilot’s generation efficiency, reliability across seasons, cost competitiveness, environmental impact and the eventual potential for scaling the technology across suitable reservoirs in India.
