Sensex crashes over 900 points, Nifty slips towards 23,600 as oil price rally rattles Dalal Street

Synopsis: Indian equity benchmarks witnessed heavy selling on Friday, with the Sensex tumbling more than 900 points and the Nifty approaching the 23,600 mark. A sharp rally in crude oil prices above USD 100 per barrel, coupled with escalating tensions in West Asia, triggered broad-based risk aversion across the market. Domestic equity markets ended deep in the red on Friday as investors turned cautious after Brent crude crossed the USD 100 per barrel level, intensifying concerns over inflation, higher import costs and slowing economic growth. The surge in oil prices, driven by rising geopolitical tensions in West Asia, weighed heavily on investor sentiment and sparked widespread selling across sectors. On a weekly basis, the Sensex shed nearly 3.2%, while the Nifty declined around 2.8%, marking their worst weekly performance in nearly four months as global uncertainties overshadowed domestic market fundamentals. Market breadth remained weak, with FMCG standing out as the lone sector trading in positive territory, while all other NSE sectoral indices traded lower. The broader market also remained under pressure, with the Nifty Smallcap 100 falling 1.3% and the Nifty Midcap 100 declining 1%, reflecting weakness across the board. What's driving the market sell-off? Crude oil surges above USD 100 per barrel: The sharp jump in Brent crude above the USD 100 mark emerged as the primary trigger for the market decline. For India, which imports more than 80% of its crude oil requirement, sustained higher oil prices pose significant macroeconomic risks. Rising crude prices can fuel inflation, widen the current account and fiscal deficits, increase input and transportation costs, weaken the rupee, and weigh on corporate profitability, leading investors to adopt a risk-off stance.
