Sensex declines 183 points, Nifty settles below 24,250
Indian benchmark indices closed in the red on August 26 following a volatile trading session, with the Nifty ending close to the 24,200 level. The Sensex slipped 183.15 points, or 0.24%, to 77,472.94, while the Nifty declined 126.80 points, or 0.52%, to 24,207.75.
Among the top Nifty performers, Bank, !UltraTech Cement, !Axis Bank, !HDFC Life and !JSW Steel posted gains. On the other hand, !Infosys, !Power Grid Corporation, !Bharti Airtel, !Tech Mahindra and !Shriram Finance were among the prominent decliners.
On the sectoral front, Metal and Private Bank indices advanced nearly 1% each, while the PSU Bank index gained 0.7%. Meanwhile, IT and Infrastructure indices declined about 1% each. Auto, Consumer Durables, Energy, FMCG, Oil & Gas and Realty stocks also witnessed selling pressure, with losses ranging between 0.5% and 0.9%.
In the broader market, the Nifty Midcap index closed marginally lower, whereas the Nifty Smallcap index gained 0.8%, indicating relatively stronger interest in select small-cap stocks despite weakness in the headline indices.
