Flipkart gets RBI nod to lend directly, becomes first Indian e-com giant with NBFC license

Flipkart has become the first major Indian e-commerce company to receive a Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC) license from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), enabling it to offer loans directly to customers and sellers on its platform. Flipkart intends to commence lending operations within the next few months, pending internal approvals. The NBFC licence marks Flipkart's second major fintech initiative, following the launch of its UPI payments service. Implications 1. For Flipkart: Direct lending could enhance profitability and customer engagement, especially as the company prepares for a public listing in India. 2. For the E-commerce Sector: Flipkart's NBFC status may set a precedent, potentially prompting other e-commerce platforms to seek similar licences. 3. For Consumers and Sellers: Access to in-house financing options could streamline purchases and sales, offering more integrated financial services within the e-commerce ecosystem. Flipkart’s entry into the direct lending space as an NBFC marks a significant shift in the Indian digital finance ecosystem—and could have competitive implications for established NBFCs like $BAJFINANCE , particularly in the consumer and merchant lending segments.
