Biocon Secures European Approval for Malaysia Insulin Facility, Strengthening Global Biopharma Presence

Biocon Ltd. has achieved an important milestone after its Malaysia manufacturing facility received approval from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for a new drug product fill-finish line for Semglee (insulin glargine). The company expects supplies from this facility to European markets to begin in the second quarter (Q2) of FY27, further strengthening its global insulin manufacturing capabilities. Alongside this development, Biocon Founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw highlighted that the company has established a long-term succession plan and believes the coming decade could be transformative for India's biopharma industry, with a strong focus on innovation and emerging technologies. Recently, Biocon also witnessed a major block deal in which 9.2 crore shares, representing 5.64% of the company's outstanding equity, changed hands at an average price of ₹400 per share, with the total transaction valued at approximately ₹3,680 crore. While Mylan exited through the deal and several domestic mutual funds emerged as buyers, analysts continue to hold differing views on the stock. Bernstein maintained an 'Underperform' rating with a target price of ₹326, citing concerns over financial stress and succession-related expectations, whereas DAM Capital retained a 'Buy' rating with a target price of ₹495, expecting stronger business performance in the second half of the current financial year, supported by the growth of products such as bUstekinumab, bAspart and bDenosumab. Overall, the EMA approval represents a positive operational milestone for Biocon, while the company's long-term growth outlook continues to attract mixed but closely watched market opinions.
