JSW Steel’s Mozambique Coking Coal Bet Strengthens Raw Material Security

JSWSTEEL
has announced the development of the Minas de Revuboè (MdR) coking coal project in Mozambique’s Moatize coal basin, a key move in its backward integration and raw material risk mitigation strategy. The asset holds total reserves of about 850 million tonnes, with an estimated 250 million tonnes of recoverable premium hard coking coal, a critical and high-cost input for blast furnace steelmaking. In the first phase, to be executed over roughly 2.5 years, JSW plans to ramp up to 2.4 million tonnes per annum of prime hard coking coal, providing a meaningful, though partial, hedge against imported coal price volatility. The mine is strategically located around 10 km north of Tete city, approximately 450 km from Beira Port and 900 km from Nacala Port, enabling seaborne supply routes into India’s west and east coast steel facilities. For India, where domestic availability of premium coking coal remains structurally constrained, this project enhances long-term supply assurance and aligns with JSW’s broader decarbonisation roadmap by securing higher-quality coal that can improve furnace efficiency and reduce emissions intensity per tonne of steel.
