Tata Power Strengthens Global Solar Ambitions and Prepares for Nuclear Expansion

TATAPOWER
is strategically positioning itself to capture global demand for solar modules, especially after the US imposed steep tariffs on imports from Southeast Asia. With a robust manufacturing capacity of nearly 4.9 GW, the company anticipates exporting close to 1 GW to global markets, including the US. MD & CEO Praveer Sinha highlighted that alongside solar, Tata Power is actively exploring opportunities in nuclear energy, with plans underway to set up large and modular nuclear plants. Site identification is in progress, and construction of the first facility is expected within the next two years, aiming for operational readiness in the early 2030s. The company is also engaging with domestic and international players for technology partnerships. While nuclear projects involve a capital outlay nearly twice that of conventional coal plants, the lower fuel costs could enable nuclear energy to be a competitive long-term solution. However, Sinha emphasized the critical need for clear government frameworks, particularly for nuclear fuel sourcing and waste management, suggesting the creation of a dedicated entity to support the deployment of small modular reactors (SMRs).
