Tech Mahindra slips as IT stocks remain under pressure

Tech Mahindra Limited

TECHM
was one of the notable Nifty 50 laggards on October 6, falling more than 2% while the benchmark index gained close to 1%. The divergence is notable because the broader market recovery was fairly strong. For me, this is less about today's decline and more about what the upcoming earnings season can tell us about demand in the IT sector. What the market is pricing Indian IT stocks have been under pressure for several weeks amid concerns around global growth, elevated bond yields and uncertainty over technology spending. Reuters also noted that the IT sector has continued to underperform the broader Indian market despite the recent rebound. Tech Mahindra is therefore entering its results period with a relatively high expectation for evidence of improving demand. The key question Revenue growth alone will not be enough. I would pay more attention to constant-currency growth, deal wins, operating margin and management commentary on discretionary technology spending. A strong order book is useful, but investors ultimately need to see those bookings converting into revenue. What could change the view? A meaningful improvement in sequential revenue growth combined with stable or improving EBIT margins would be a positive signal. On the other hand, weak discretionary spending or another downgrade in the growth outlook would keep the stock under pressure. **My approach** I would not treat today's fall as a standalone sell signal. The stock needs to be evaluated alongside the broader IT earnings cycle. The next results and management commentary should provide a much better indication of whether the current weakness is an opportunity or a reflection of deteriorating fundamentals.
