Nifty Auto Tumbles 3% as Markets Open Weak

Markets opened lower today, with the Sensex falling 287.40 points (0.40%) to 72,192.89 and the Nifty down 76.75 points (0.34%) to 22,543.70, as elevated US Treasury yields and continued worries about West Asia supply disruptions weighed on sentiment. By 11:00 AM, the Sensex had pared some losses to 72,438.08, while the Nifty was at 22,565.10. Nifty Auto is clearly the day's weakest sector, down nearly 3%, confirmed as the Nifty50's biggest sectoral loser, down 1.70% to 25,848.20 and now 9.28% lower over the past 30 days, as traders digest September auto sales data.

BAJAJ-AUTO
is the stock most affected today, falling as much as 5% to ₹10,332, making it the top loser on the Nifty50. The drop came despite the company reporting a 5% YoY rise in September sales to 538,443 units, because that figure still missed Street expectations Healthcare also continues to underperform, extending yesterday's sharp sell-off triggered by concerns over a proposed price cap on private hospital room rents. Smallcaps are underperforming the broader market even more than auto. Nifty Smallcap 250 fell the most among broad indices, down 0.61%, and is now 3.67% lower over 30 days, a sign the recent weakness has been especially punishing for smaller names. IT and private banks are the bright spots today, bucking the broader trend, Nifty IT gained as much as 1.62% and Nifty Private Bank rose around 0.74-1%, a genuine divergence from the rest of the market.
