Title: Nifty Metal Gains 7% in August on Supply Constraints
Nifty metal index has emerged as the standout sectoral performer in August, rising around 7% despite a choppy broader market. The rally has been supported by firm global metal prices, a recovery in domestic steel prices and tightening supply conditions across several base metals. Analysts believe the current uptrend is being driven more by supply constraints than by a sudden surge in demand, which could provide greater durability to the rally. Copper, aluminium, tin and zinc remain among the preferred metals, with supply disruptions and capacity restrictions supporting prices. Copper continues to trade near record levels, while expectations for refined production growth in 2026 have been lowered, adding to supply concerns. Aluminium is also benefiting from structural supply tightness linked to China’s capacity restrictions and environmental curbs. In the steel segment, domestic long steel prices have recovered around 12% over the past month after declining sharply during June and July. However, rising coking coal prices and relatively weak iron ore prices remain key risks for steelmakers. Analysts are therefore more positive on copper and aluminium, while steel is viewed as a potential catch-up trade. Going ahead, Chinese steel production and exports, raw material prices, global inventories, energy costs, the US Federal Reserve and the dollar will remain important factors in determining whether the metal rally can sustain.
