India Rises to Third-Largest Startup Ecosystem

India has become the world’s third-largest startup ecosystem, with nearly 2.5 lakh startups established over the past decade, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said at the India-Japan Startup Roundtable in Tokyo. Goyal said India’s large consumer market, strong pool of science and technology talent, digital infrastructure and growing innovation ecosystem make it an attractive destination for Japanese investors and technology companies. He proposed four key areas to strengthen India-Japan startup cooperation. These include a Deep-Tech Capital Corridor to bring more long-term funding for research and new technologies, an Innovation Bridge connecting universities and research institutions, greater manufacturing and technology integration, and regular startup pitching platforms to connect Indian startups with Japanese companies and investors. India offers scale, skilled talent, digital capabilities and fast-growing entrepreneurship, while Japan brings advanced technology, manufacturing expertise, quality standards and long-term capital. Combining these strengths could help Indian startups develop globally competitive products and expand into international markets. Effect on Stock Market The development is positive for the Indian stock market, especially for companies linked to technology, electronics, manufacturing, semiconductors, defence, engineering and deep-tech. Higher Japanese investment and technology partnerships could improve capital availability, manufacturing capabilities and business opportunities for Indian companies. It may also support the growth of startups and create new opportunities for listed companies that provide technology, infrastructure and manufacturing services. However, the immediate impact on stock prices is likely to be limited, as the proposed partnerships will take time to translate into actual investments, orders and earnings. Overall, the news is long-term positive for India’s technology and manufacturing sectors.
