18 areas of growth that McKinsey identifies as potential drivers for India's ascent on the global stage by 2040.

India has identified 18 critical sectors that could propel its next significant economic growth, potentially contributing 30% of additional Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2040, as reported by McKinsey & Company. These sectors are categorized into nine global and nine national domains, encompassing advanced technologies and vital domestic capabilities. Global opportunities include electric vehicles (EVs) and batteries, semiconductors, e-commerce, cybersecurity, cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, nuclear fission, and space exploration. Significantly, the demand for EVs in India is expected to increase 15 times by 2040, its AI industry could generate Rs. 1,21,422 crore (US$ 14 billion) by 2030, and the nation aims to reach 100 gigawatts (GW) of nuclear capacity by 2047. The space sector is also gaining traction, aiming for 8% of the global market by 2033, with over 200 startups and Rs. 3,903 crore (US$ 450 million) in investments from 2021 to 2024. On the national level, the nine sectors focus on achieving self-reliance and domestic transformation: medical devices, biopharmaceuticals, auto parts, renewable energy with storage, aerospace and defense, biomass-based chemicals (Bio-to-X), urban construction, travel and tourism, and industrial electronics. Areas like medical devices and biopharmaceuticals exhibit strong growth potential, while renewable energy aims for a capacity of 500 GW backed by battery storage. The auto component sector has transformed a Rs. 21,683 crore (US$ 2.5 billion) trade deficit into a Rs. 2,602 crore (US$ 300 million) surplus. McKinsey suggests that a customized strategy is vital, as each sector requires distinct approaches in terms of policy, investment, and talent based on its development and market focus. With timely and strategic initiatives, India can accelerate its domestic transformation and enhance its global leadership in key industries.
