India’s electric vehicle (EV) sector is experiencing rapid growth, backed by robust policy support, rising consumer interest, and significant private investments. Bloomberg NEF’s EV Outlook 2024 projects EV sales to reach 5.9 million by 2040, with a 199% growth expected by 2027. Government schemes such as the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) and the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme have accelerated domestic manufacturing and innovation. Tata Motors has played a key role by offering a wide EV portfolio. Tata Power has also built a comprehensive charging infrastructure. Nearly all Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) announced EV expansion plans at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo, solidifying the sector's future potential. Technological advancements are further shaping India's EV ecosystem. Innovations in sodium-ion and aluminium-air batteries by KPIT Technologies, Phinergy, and Log9 Materials aim to improve safety, cost-efficiency, and sustainability. Bengaluru-based Exponent Energy and GPS Renewables are enhancing charging infrastructure. Attero, Lico, and Lohum Cleantech are leading in battery recycling. Startups like Planet Electric are leveraging lightweight materials. Vecmocon is developing efficient motor systems to reduce rare-earth metal dependency. Retrofitting by RACE Energy, ETrio, and E3V Industries promotes EV adoption by converting traditional vehicles. Additionally, V2G integration by Sheru and efforts by Magenta Mobility highlight EVs’ role in energy stabilisation. With its cost-effective solutions for last-mile mobility and battery swapping from Sun Mobility and Battery Smart, India is set to emerge as a global leader in sustainable and affordable electric transportation.
