According to Careernet, the flexible workforce in India's (IT/ITes) sector is projected to grow to 900,000 by the year 2030.
India's Information Technology (IT) and Information Technology-enabled Services (ITeS) sector is increasingly adopting flexible staffing as an essential workforce strategy. Careernet's report titled The Rise of Flexi Staffing: Outlook for India’s IT/ITeS Talent Landscape indicates that the country's gig economy is growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15% and is expected to reach 900,000 professionals by 2030. Currently, there are 390,000 flexi workers in the IT/ITeS sector, which constitutes about 7% of the total 5.8 million professionals in this field. This transition is driven by digital advancements and global economic changes, with companies preferring models that provide agility, specialization, and scalability. The findings in the report are derived from real-time recruitment data, market analysis, and prevailing industry trends. Mr. Neelabh Shukla, Chief Business Officer at Careernet, pointed out that India's position as a leading offshoring destination is driving the demand for flexible talent. For workers, especially those from millennials and Gen Z, flexible positions promote skill development, career exploration, and a balanced work-life. Bengaluru is at the forefront of flexi staffing, accounting for 25% of the flexi workforce in the IT/ITeS sector, followed by Hyderabad at 15%. Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Pune, and Chennai each contribute around 10%. Moreover, tier II and III cities are also becoming significant, now comprising 20% of the workforce, thanks to access to local talent and more affordable business models. This move towards decentralization is allowing companies to expand without the constraints.
