Bangalore Metro made a major advancement in urban transportation by presenting the prototype of its autonomous metro trainsets, created for the forthcoming BMRCL corridors. The 5RS-DM initiative will support Namma Metro's Phases 2, 2A, and 2B, featuring the much-awaited Airport Line. The Pink Line prototype was presented by BMRCL Managing Director J. Ravishankar, with BEML Chairman and Managing Director Shantanu Roy and other senior officials, who were also present for a successful test run at the BEML Rail Complex. BEML, the public sector firm located in Bengaluru, will deliver 318 standard-gauge metro cars for the Blue Line (Airport Line) and Pink Line, with all design, engineering, and manufacturing conducted internally. This deployment is associated with a Rs 3,177 crore (US$ 352 million) agreement BEML won via competitive bidding, underlining the firm’s expanding involvement in India's metro framework, especially in driverless (GoA4) urban transportation. The trainsets will be subjected to thorough testing and commissioning as per BMRCL’s timeline, with extensive maintenance support arranged for as long as 15 years. In August 2023, BEML commenced an order for driverless trains with 53 trainsets, which later grew to 66 sets, amounting to 396 cars. Shantanu Roy characterized the prototype’s launch as a crucial landmark in providing next-generation mobility options for urban areas in India.
