Chicago Roundtable: India’s Next-Gen Investment Agenda

Addressing a Chicago Business Roundtable with US investors and business leaders, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted India’s market scale, skilled workforce, and decade-long reform momentum as key drivers for long-term global investment. Emphasizing the framework of “Manufacture in India, for India and for the world,” she invited capital allocation across strategic sectors, including high-tech manufacturing, defense, artificial intelligence, food processing, and financial services. Crucial to this value proposition is India’s population-scale Digital Public Infrastructure—anchored by platforms such as the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), digital identity frameworks, DigiLocker, and ONDC—which provides a foundation for rapid enterprise deployment and digital integration. The Minister noted that India’s growth trajectory is shifting toward high-value activities, positioned by expanding Global Capability Centres (GCCs) into innovation hubs for analytics, semiconductor design, and advanced engineering. Additionally, GIFT IFSC was showcased as a primary gateway linking global capital to Indian opportunities, while Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes, Atmanirbhar Bharat, and the iDEX initiative continue to drive deep localized supply chains in electronics, autonomous systems, and defense production. By encouraging multinational corporations to co-develop and co-produce advanced technology locally, India aims to serve as a sustainable, core node in restructured global supply chains.
