Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), supported by the GMR Group, aims to boost Indira Gandhi International Airport's yearly passenger capacity by roughly 20%, rising from the present 10.5 crore to 12.5 crore by 2029-30. The expansion will occur without the immediate replacement of Terminal Two. Mr. Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, Chief Executive Officer of Delhi International Airport Limited, stated that the growth will mainly result from building Pier E at Terminal three, which will increase passenger capacity by 1-1.2 crore per year, alleviate congestion at terminal one, and provide more aircraft parking spaces. The airport authority is completing the master plan to decide if the new pier will cater to domestic or international travellers.
Terminal three presently runs four piers, two designated for domestic flights and the other two for international flights, with plans to convert one domestic pier for international use this winter. The extended development strategy involves tearing down Terminal Two, constructed in 1986, to create a bigger, contemporary building. The timing will rely on the increase in passengers and the operational effects of Noida International Airport, set to open this winter. The renovated T2 was reopened on October 26. DIAL usually initiates new capacity expansion once passenger traffic hits 80% of total capacity, anticipated to be around 10 crore passengers, in line with the airport’s expected growth path.
