From 3 GW to 162 GW: Inside India’s Unstoppable Solar Surge
India has firmly established itself as a global leader in renewable energy, expanding its installed solar capacity from a modest 3 GW in 2014 to 162.15 GW by June 2026, making solar the primary driver of the nation's clean energy mix. Accelerating this momentum, the Cabinet approved the Pradhan Mantri Surya Sarovar Yojana (PM-SSY)—a ₹5,070 crore (US$ 531.90 million) initiative spanning FY27 to FY31 that focuses on harvesting the country’s estimated 102.18 GW floating solar potential. The scheme aims to deploy 5,000 MW of floating solar capacity combined with at least 10,000 MWh of Energy Storage Systems (ESS) to stabilize the grid during peak demand, while raising total floating solar capacity to nearly 5,700 MW, cutting 10 million tonnes of annual CO₂ emissions, and creating 16,000 to 17,000 full-time jobs.
This rapid expansion is backed by robust domestic manufacturing, key policy frameworks, and widespread public adoption. Driven by the PLI Scheme and ALMM guidelines, India's solar module manufacturing capacity surged from 2.3 GW in 2014 to roughly 172 GW by March 2026, empowering the nation to add a record 44.61 GW of solar power in FY26 alone and bring total non-fossil capacity to 283.46 GW. At the grassroots level, over 43 lakh households have adopted rooftop solar systems under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, while PM-KUSUM has benefited more than 21.77 lakh farmers with solar-powered irrigation. Supported by 54 sanctioned solar parks and global leadership through the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and OSOWOG, India continues to accelerate its clean energy transition.
