Global trading giants expand in India, driving talent rush, upgrades

Leading global trading firms, such as Citadel Securities, IMC Trading, Millennium, and Optiver, are expanding their footprints in India’s rapidly growing derivatives market. This growth is driving a significant hiring spree and motivating stock exchanges to enhance their technological infrastructure dramatically. With India representing nearly 60% of worldwide equity derivatives trading volumes in April, as reported by the Futures Industry Association, these companies see the nation as a crucial growth opportunity. IMC Trading’s head in India, Mr. Jocelyn Dentand, announced plans to increase their workforce in India by more than 50% by 2026, while Optiver intends to raise its staff to 100 by the end of 2025. Even companies with smaller operations, like Citadel Securities, are boosting their capital investments. Other firms, such as Millennium and Qube Research, are expanding their strategies in India through offices in Dubai and Singapore. The influx of foreign companies is creating intense competition for skilled professionals, with top technical institutes like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) becoming key recruitment sources. According to recruiter Aquis Search, around 300 individuals have been employed in India over the past two years across trading, technology, and compliance positions. As salaries for entry-level traders have more than tripled in the last three years, the battle for talent has broadened to include universities other than the IITs. India’s leading stock exchanges are taking advantage of this growth; the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) plans to introduce 500 co-location racks by FY26, while the National Stock Exchange (NSE) will install 2,000 within the next two years to lower latency for high-frequency trades. With over Rs. 4,500 crore (US$ 519.5 million) allocated for technological enhancements at various exchanges, India is positioning itself as a significant center for global quantitative and algorithmic trading.
