Group Captive Solar Powers Steel Decarbonization in Bikaner

Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) has commissioned a 72.5 MW captive solar project at Kalasar in Bikaner, Rajasthan, to power Tata Steel Limited's operations through its subsidiary, TP Vardhman Surya Limited. Deployed with 1,71,360 modules manufactured domestically by TP Solar Limited, the installation is projected to generate 166 million units (MUs) of clean electricity per year and abate approximately 1,18,856 tonnes of annual carbon emissions. This captive solar setup underscores a growing trend of group-linked renewable assets supporting industrial decarbonization within heavy manufacturing sectors. With this commissioning, TPREL’s cumulative renewable utility portfolio has expanded to 12.3 GW. This includes 7 GW of operational assets (comprising 5.7 GW solar and 1.3 GW wind) and nearly 5.3 GW in project pipeline capacity (2.2 GW solar and 3.1 GW wind) slated for commercialization over the next 6 to 24 months. Providing green power across diverse sectors—such as steel, data centres, telecom, automotive, and IT—TPREL remains anchored to Tata Power’s broader low-carbon vision and aligned with India’s national target of installing 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030.
