Hindalco Industries Ltd, part of the Aditya Birla Group, has recently revealed a significant expansion of its aluminium operations in Odisha. The firm plans to allocate an impressive Rs. 21,000 crore (US$ 2.3 billion) to be invested in this expansion to satisfy the increasing demand for premium aluminium products in India. This expansion will raise the Aditya Aluminium complex's capacity in Sambalpur by 360,000 tonnes annually. In a different update, Hindalco has launched a Rs. 4,500 crore (US$ 500 million) production facility for Flat Rolled Products and battery-grade aluminium foil, the first of its kind in the nation. This facility will address the increasing needs of the electric vehicle, energy storage, and advanced manufacturing sectors. This forms part of Hindalco's comprehensive capex strategy in Odisha, where the firm has set aside nearly Rs. 37,000 crore (US$ 4.11 billion) for its aluminium operations, encompassing both upstream and downstream activities. This growth will reduce India’s reliance on imported flat-rolled aluminium and enhance the nation’s metals sector's competitiveness in the premium market.
The battery-grade foil production facility, capable of producing 1.7 lakh tonnes annually, will facilitate the manufacturing of up to 100 GWh of lithium-ion batteries, addressing the increasing demand for energy transition and electric vehicle adoption in India. At present, the firm employs 23,000 individuals, and this new aluminium expansion initiative is anticipated to create over 15,000 additional jobs in the area. Hindalco’s emphasis on incorporating renewable energy into its smelter power supply chain showcases the company’s dedication to sustainable industrial development.
