In January 2026, the retail car market in India experienced a robust year-on-year growth of nearly 18%, reaching a total of 27,22,558 vehicle registrations as per information from FADA (Federation of Automobile Dealers Association). This expansion was bolstered by robust sales following GST, along with solid cash flows in rural regions after the harvest and substantial savings from weddings. Registrations for two-wheelers accounted for the biggest share, increasing by 21% to 18,52,870 registrations, while three-wheeled vehicles and commercial vehicle registrations rose by 19% and 15%, respectively. Tractor registrations saw a substantial rise, showing a 23% increase attributed to advancements in rural and urban sectors, indicating a more widespread recovery. Retail sales of passenger vehicles surpass early scepticism, showing a 7% rise from the previous year, totalling 513,475 units; ongoing structural growth into non-urban regions and rural passenger vehicle sales jumped over 14% compared to last year. As stated byMr. C.S. Vigneshwar, President of FADA, the growth of the passenger vehicle sector is due to a rising demand for SUVs, a resurgence in entry-level cars, and numerous appealing offers from manufacturers. Looking ahead, dealers maintain considerable optimism regarding February-March, bolstered by a growth-focused budget for 2026, an emphasis on infrastructure, and stable interest rates; about 80% of dealers expect ongoing growth in the future. The sector is expected to conclude the fiscal year robustly, supported by an ongoing solid inquiry pipeline and end-of-year financial purchases.
