India and the United Kingdom (UK) Finalize Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA)

India and the United Kingdom (UK) have formalized the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), representing a significant advancement in their economic partnership led by Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi. The agreement, signed by Union Minister of Commerce & Industry Mr. Piyush Goyal, Secretary of State for Business and Trade Mr. Jonathan Reynolds, and the President of the Board of Trade of the United Kingdom, emphasizes the dedication of both countries to enhancing economic integration. Bilateral trade is presently at Rs. 4,83,784 crore (US$ 56 billion), with a collective goal to double this amount by 2030. CETA grants tariff-free entry for 99% of India's exports to the UK, delivering considerable advantages for labor-intensive sectors like textiles, leather, toys, seafood, and precious stones and jewelry. Rapidly expanding sectors such as engineering products, automotive parts, and organic chemicals are also anticipated to gain advantages. The services sector, a significant part of India’s economy, will achieve expanded market access in Information Technology (IT) services, finance, education, legal services, and digital trade. Eased visa processes and relaxed entry regulations will enhance the mobility of Indian professionals in fields like chefs, engineers, yoga teachers, and architects. Significantly, the Double Contribution Convention will relieve Indian workers and their employers from UK social security payments for three years, boosting talent competitiveness. Crafted with inclusivity as a priority, CETA additionally enhances opportunities for MSMEs, startups, farmers, women and youth entrepreneurs, as well as artisans in global value chains. It promotes sustainability, fosters innovation, and diminishes non-tariff obstacles.
