India has emerged as the world’s second-largest 5G market, boasting over 400 million 5G subscribers, trailing only behind China, according to Union Minister of Communications Mr Jyotiraditya Scindia. Since its introduction in 2022, 5G networks now cover 99.6% of the nation's districts and serve roughly 85% of the population, attributed to the deployment of approximately 4.69 lakh 5G Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) by telecom providers, marking one of the quickest adoption rates globally. The Union Minister of Communications, MMrJyotiraditya Scindia, reported that around 25 crore individuals have embraced 5G services, reflecting a swift transformation in India’s mobile ecosystem that is establishing new worldwide standards for size, speed, and digital advancement. Telephony in rural regions has experienced significant growth, with an increase of 42.9%, nearly twice the growth observed in urban regions over the past ten years. In another update, the overall number of internet connections in India has exceeded 100 crore, a remarkable increase from 25.15 crore, reflecting the extensive acceptance of digital technology across the nation. In accordance with the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, the rollout of homegrown telecom infrastructure has accelerated. India has become the fifth nation globally to develop its own 4G technology, which can be upgraded to 5G, highlighting its commitment to technological self-sufficiency.
