India is poised to enhance its railway infrastructure with the introduction of Vande Bharat 4.0, aimed at fulfilling both local and export requirements for advanced trainsets, as announced by Union Minister for Railways, Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw, at the opening of the 16th International Railway Equipment Exhibition (IREE) 2025. The upcoming train will set global benchmarks in technology, passenger comfort, and safety, showcasing upgraded seating, better restrooms, and superior coach craftsmanship, with a launch aimed for 18 months. Vande Bharat 3.0 competes with global trains, reaching speeds of 0 to 100 kmph in 52 seconds while generating less noise and vibration, and the 4.0 version intends to exceed these performance standards. The modernization initiative features specific high-speed passenger corridors aimed at speeds reaching 350 kmph, aiding in the intended 7,000 km of exclusive routes by 2047 as part of the Viksit Bharat vision. The Amrit Bharat trains are being enhanced to version 4.0, with push-pull locomotives scheduled for testing in 36 months. Safety improvements involve the implementation of Kavach 4.0, India’s homegrown automatic train protection system, while Kavach 5.0 facilitates operations at 350 kmph.
