India Launches Its Initial Shipment of Rose-Scented Litchi from Pathankot to Qatar.
In a notable advancement for India’s horticultural exports, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), part of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, in partnership with the Department of Horticulture under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare of the Government of Punjab, dispatched the first shipment of one metric tonne of rose-scented litchi from Pathankot, Punjab, to Doha, Qatar, on June 23, 2025. Furthermore, half a metric tonne of litchi was also sent from Pathankot to Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), marking a significant dual export achievement and underscoring India’s growing footprint in global fresh fruit markets. This project demonstrates the superior quality of Indian horticultural products and presents vital opportunities for agricultural communities by improving international market access for fresh, high-value items. APEDA coordinated the shipment in collaboration with the Punjab Department of Horticulture, the Lulu Group, and the progressive farmer Mr. Prabhat Singh from Sujanpur, who provided the high-quality produce. As reported by the National Horticulture Board, Punjab produced 71,490 metric tonnes of litchi in FY24, accounting for 12.39% of the total national production. In FY25, India’s total exports of fruits and vegetables amounted to Rs. 33,085 crore (US$ 3.87 billion), representing a 5.67% increase from the previous year. While mangoes, bananas, grapes, and oranges continue to be major exports, fruits like cherries, jamun, and litchis are steadily gaining traction in international markets. These initiatives illustrate the Indian government's commitment to diversifying the agricultural export portfolio and empowering farmers, with APEDA playing a crucial role in enhancing market access and boosting India’s competitiveness in agricultural and processed food sectors.
