India reached a major achievement in renewable energy installations, incorporating 34.40 GW of additional solar and wind capacity in the first nine months of 2025, representing a 71% increase from the same timeframe last year. As per the Founder and CEO of JMK Research, Ms. Jyoti Gulia, solar capacity rose by 68.90%, whereas wind installations surged by an even greater 88.80%. The capacity increase during the first three quarters of 2025 has already exceeded the total increases noted in 2024, demonstrating robust growth momentum in the industry. As of September 2025, India's total renewable energy installed capacity reached 247.30 GW, with solar contributing 52%, wind 21%, large hydro 20%, bio power 5%, and small hydro 2%. From January to September 2025, the nation installed 22.50 GW of utility-scale solar power, indicating a 70% increase year-on-year, with almost 50% of this capacity coming online in Q3 2025. Rooftop solar installations increased by 81% year-over-year, with 5.80 GW added during that time. Public Sector Banks approved more than 5.79 lakh loan requests totaling Rs. 10,907 crore (US$ 1.31 billion) allocated for rooftop solar initiatives. In the off-grid and distributed solar sector, 1.17 GW was incorporated, increasing by 13% compared to the previous year. In contrast, wind energy capacity increased by 4.96 GW from January to September 2025. She anticipated this momentum to persist, forecasting an additional 11-12 GW in the last quarter, resulting in India’s total solar and wind installations reaching a record 45-46 GW by the end of 2025.
