India’s $210B EV Vision for Global Auto Leadership

Addressing a CII-ITC summit on sustainable development, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari projected that India's electric vehicle (EV) market will reach Rs. 20 lakh crore ($209.55 billion) by 2030, generating up to five crore jobs. India currently has 57 lakh registered EVs, representing a 7% market penetration rate. Highlighted by major two-wheeler exporters Bajaj Auto and Hero MotoCorp sending over half their production abroad, India's broader auto industry has expanded from Rs. 14 lakh crore to Rs. 22 lakh crore during Gadkari's tenure as transport minister. Now valued at Rs. 23 lakh crore ($240.99 billion), the sector ranks third globally behind the United States and China. To achieve the government's target of becoming the world's top automotive market within five years, India leverages key advantages in skilled labor, manufacturing quality, and cost competitiveness, despite current supply constraints like an annual domestic demand for one lakh electric buses against a capacity of only 50,000 to 60,000 units. To tackle the country's Rs. 22 lakh crore ($230.51 billion) annual expenditure on fossil fuel imports and reduce associated pollution, Gadkari emphasized expanding highway networks, alternative fuels, and biofuels. Strategic investments in expressways and economic corridors have already yielded significant results, dropping domestic logistics costs from 16% to 10% according to a joint study by IIT Chennai, IIT Kanpur, and IIM Bangalore. The government aims to bring logistics costs down further to 8% to make Indian exports far more competitive globally.
